More candles! Names! Feelings! and next week, pancakes! Plus some gorgeous notices.
My God is the God of Many Names
THIS SUNDAY, 7PM
Ok I’m still not over how beautiful the church looked on Sunday so we’ll have some more candles and low light vibes this week too.
We’ll have a longer time of reflection listening to some stunning music by David Lang, and then pivot to writing some of our own names or lists of names for the divine - inspired by the 99 names for Allah, as well as Christian and Hebrew sources.
Pancake Day!
NEXT SUNDAY 7PM
Let’s have some pancakes!! A traditional way to use up all of your yummy stuff before the fast for lent begins, I’ll be chain cooking pancakes for us to enjoy. I’m sure we’ll have Godly, reflective and meaningful discussions as well. But also, pancakes.
Connections: call for submissions
We have a call for submissions to the benefice (St Pauls and Cotham) real life newsletter, that traditionally contains a rich trove of writing, poetry, thoughts, images, art and more. They’re asking for submissions relating to lament and admiration for our beautiful world in the face of climate emergency. Read more here and send submissions to cathfeeny@gmail.com during Feb.
‘The Bright Field’: a silent retreat
March 20th - 22nd at Llangasty Retreat House
The glorious, energetic and ever creative Phillip Dixon will be leading a silent retreat at the stunning Llangasty Retreat house, focusing on the poetry of R.S Thomas, a treasured Welsh poet.
It will explore the themes of searching, waiting, questioning the meaning and purpose of our lives, and centrally our relationship with God. It runs from Friday evening March 20th to Sunday afternoon (22nd), costing £250 but with concession and comp tickets available - so please get in touch if cost is a barrier. All the info here.
To repair a bridge you have to close it
Just a note to say if you loved the music Adam played on Sunday, you can find it in the Foundation Services Spotify Playlist - where (most) of the music we’ve listened to on Sundays is kept for your anytime enjoyment.
I won’t keep you long. I realised with a start when looking at the bridge above, that to repair a bridge, you have to close it. And when you’re building one, you can’t cross it yet.
I guess that has similar energy to a sign I had on my wall when I was growing up: if you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got.
They say when God closes a door she opens a window. My experience is that when God closes a door, if you stop banging on it and turn round, you will often find an entirely new concert hall.
Try being brave this week. I’ll see you Sunday.
Love,
Andy
